MINOTIS, ALEXIS
(Chania, 1900 - Athens, 1990)

Great theatre actor and director. He first appeared on the stage in Chania in 1921 playing the role of the Chorus Leader and later that of the Messenger in Sophocles' "Oedipus Tyrannus" with Veakis. From 1925 until 1930 he cooperated with M.Kotopouli. Some of his greatest performances during his successful career were "The Merchant of Venice", "King Lear", Ibsen's "Ghosts" and "Peer Gynt", "Macbeth", "Hamlet". He also directed ancient tra- gedies ("Hecuba", "Antigone", "Phoenissae", "Prometheus Bound", "Oedipus at Colonus") and from the foreign theatrical pieces pro- minent remained his directions in Sean O'Casey's "Juno and the Paycock", in Strindberg's "The Father", in Brecht's "Mother Courage".
In his performances of the ancient dramas Minotis followed mainly the views of Fotos Politis and Dimitris Rondiris and based them all on speech .
